What is Spiritual Counseling?
Spiritual Counseling…
Spiritual Counseling is similar to other forms of counseling except the focus is on the relationship between one’s Divine orientation and themselves; the counselor listens, prompts, and reflects the conversation toward one’s Divine relationship. Therefore, the goal is to help the person receiving the counseling draw closer to the Divine, their higher power, or to God.
The Spirit
God may be with us always, but we humans often drift apart from God. Spiritual Counseling provides time to reconnect with the spirit part of our being. The conversation can help us remove the obstacles to us feeling the presence of the Holy One in our lives.
- Spiritual counseling focuses on the spiritual experience. – It is concerned with a person’s actual experience of a relationship with God or their Higher Power
- Spiritual counseling is about a relationship. – We can learn so much about ourselves through a healthy counseling relationship. Spiritual counseling can help us heal wounds and flourish in spiritual relationships.
- Spiritual counseling is about progress, not perfection. – We all know that we have messed up and we’re often our worst own critics. Through spiritual counseling, we can deal with our issues, find forgiveness, and progress as healthy spiritual beings.
- The real spiritual counselor is your Higher Power. – How you refer to God, Allah, Mother Earth, Light, Energy… is not nearly as important as identifying with a power besides your own ego. A spiritual director or counselor strives to help you connect with that power so it guides you and upholds you.
